"A portrait is not made in the camera but on either side of it. It’s about the connection between the person, the place, and the light that finds them." — Inspired by Edward Steichen

Choosing the right location is one of the first steps in creating a portrait you will cherish forever. As an Arvada-based photographer, I am constantly inspired by the "wild light" and diverse landscapes right here in our backyard. Whether you want sweeping mountain vistas, tall golden grass, or a charming "Main Street" feel, Arvada has it all.

Here are my top five favorite spots for a photo session in Arvada that work any time of the year:

1. Majestic View Park & Nature Center

It truly lives up to its name. With over 80 acres of wetlands, prairie, and a beautiful demonstration garden, this is my go-to for Family Portraits, especially during the summer and fall. The westward-facing views of the Front Range are unbeatable during golden hour.

  • Best for: Families with kids (lots of space to run!) and maternity sessions.
  • Pro Tip: The yellow wildflowers in late summer are a dream.

2. Olde Town Arvada

If you prefer an urban, "Americana" vibe, Olde Town is the place to be. Between the historic brick buildings, the iconic Arvada Water Tower, and the colorful murals, there is a photo op around every corner.

  • Best for: Engagement Sessions or high school seniors who want a cool, modern look.
  • Pro Tip: We can even stop at a local brewery or the Arvada Tavern for a few "lifestyle" shots!

3. Standley Lake Regional Park

For that "Adventure" feel without the long drive to the mountains, Standley Lake is a gem. The combination of tall prairie grass and the massive lake backdrop makes for incredibly peaceful, airy images.

  • Best for: Couples and "Adventure" sessions.
  • Pro Tip: It’s particularly stunning in the fall when the brush turns deep shades of orange and gold.

4. Local Flower Farms

Arvada certainly doesn't fall short when it comes to beautiful, small-scale flower farms. These local spots are everywhere, offering a colorful and textured landscape that feels like a private garden oasis. It is the perfect way to ensure your portraits feel both dramatic and incredibly unique while supporting our local Arvada growers.

  • Best for: Senior portrait sessions and
  • Pro Tip: Timing is everything here! July through August is best for those "wild" fields of color.

5. Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge

This is the smallest urban wildlife refuge in the country, and it is a hidden treasure. It offers a variety of "looks"—from wooden boardwalks and quiet ponds to shaded forest paths.

  • Best for: Intimate portraits and nature lovers.
  • Note: We keep it "wild" here by staying on the trails to protect the local habitat!
