Master the art of picking out your wardrobe for your Colorado photo shoot

You have booked me as your photographer and have decided on the perfect Colorado location during a time when the "wild light" is at its peak. Now what? Next step: Picking out the outfits to complete your portrait session. This might be a daunting task for some but with my wardrobe guide, you will have the perfect outfits picked out in no time!

Our landscape is bold here in Colorado. Deep greens, golden grasses(especially when the sun is setting), vibrant autumn red and orange leaves, and our granite peaks make for some of the most beautiful scenery for unforgettable photography sessions. Because our scenery is so bold, your outfits shouldn't compete with it, instead it should complement it. Here is my guide to looking timeless and feeling confident and comfortable during our photography session.
Coordinate, Don't Match: The days of everyone wearing the same thing are over! Instead pick a color palette of 3-4 coordinating tones.
Pro Tip: Start with one "hero" outfit, like a floral dress for Mom, and pull colors from that pattern for everyone else’s
solids and textures.
Embrace Earthy and Muted Tones: To make your skin tones glow and keep the focus on your connection, stick to complimentary colors that are found in the natural landscape surrounding you.
Spring/Summer: Dusty blue, sage green, blush, and cream
Fall/Winter: Rust, mustard, olive, navy, and deep burgundy
Avoid: Neon's and bright true reds. These can cast unflattering colors onto your skin and don't coordinate with the
natural scenery.
Think Classic and Modern, Not Trendy: Ever look back a photo and think, "what was I thinking wearing that?" Yup, me too! Pick out pieces that will stand the test of time and will look classic even 20 years from now. Think solid colored maxi dress in an earthy tone with a pair of brown leather cowgirl boots or a well fitted cream sweater with dark wash denim and leather boots.
Layers Are Your Best Friend (Especially in Arvada, Colorado): Colorado weather can sometimes change in a heartbeat. Layers not only keep you warm but also add visual depth and texture to your photos. A chunky knit sweater or a flowing shawl can completely change the look of a session without a full outfit change.
Movement and Texture: Movement translates beautifully on camera! I love maxi dresses, long skirts, or scarves that can catch a breeze. For textures, think corduroy, knits, denim, or lace. These fabrics catch the light and add a "touchable" quality to your images.
Footwear for the Foothills: Since we’ll be exploring trails or parks like Majestic View, leave the stilettos at home. Leather boots, stylish flats, or clean, neutral sneakers are best. If you have your heart set on fancy shoes, wear your hikers to the spot and we’ll swap them out when we arrive!
